4 Lewis, Joseph H.
1907-2000Este magnifico realizador, nacido en Nueva York, empieza en el departamento de montaje de la Mas cot en 1935, de donde pasa a la Universal siempre en el mismo cometido, para terminar dirigiendo su primer largometraje dos anos despues. Ya en la primera etapa de su carrera como director muestra cualidades importantes como creador de universos visuales, logrando algun magnifico filme como The Invisible Ghost (1940), convencional muestra de ci ne de terror con Bela Lugosi como protagonista, que el talento de Lewis transforma en un filme me morable por muchos conceptos. Boss of Hang town Mesa, por su parte, es mucho mas que una pelicula de serie, rodada a la mayor gloria de Johnny Mack Brown. Aunque en esta primera etapa abundan tambien las obras poco distinguidas, el segundo periodo de la trayectoria profesional de Lewis, que podemos situar cronologicamente entre 1945 y 1958, abunda en obras maestras o que se acercan a esa calificacion. Empezamos con la magnifica My Name Is Julia Ross, para seguir con las esplendidas Relato criminal (The Undercover Man, 1949), El demonio de las armas (Gun Crazy, 1950) y Agente especial (The Big Combo, 1955), por citar solo algunas, ejemplos se neros de cine negro. Los westerns de esta segunda etapa son, todos ellos, de primer nivel, especialmente A Lawless Street y Terror in a Texas Town, filme modelico con el que Lewis cierra una estimulante filmografia. 1889-1949Alumno de Allan Dwan y David W. Griffith, con los que trabajo, el hombre que firma Lo que el viento se llevo (Gone with the Wind, 1939) es ya un realizador veterano y mediocre cuando realiza algunas muy famosas peliculas como la citada y El mago de Oz (The Wizard of Oz, 1939). En el mudo, dirigio, sobre todo, filmes de accion de tono decididamente viril, lo que le acarreo la fama de ser un “director de hombres”. En los origenes del cine parlante, dirige dos westerns con un joven Gary Cooper como protagonista. The Virginian se hara famosa inmediatamente, como sus realizaciones posteriores, Tierra de pasion (Red Dust, 1932), primera de las tres versiones de la historia que conocemos mejor como Mogambo (en la pelicula de John Ford, Ava Gardner sustituye a la Jean Harlow de Tierra de pasion, mientras el seductor Clark Gable es el mismo, 20 anos despues), La isla del tesoro (Treasure Island, 1934), y la popularisima Capitanes intrepidos (Captains Courageous, 1937), por la que Spencer Tracy gano un merecido Oscar. 1897-1987Hans Detlef Sierck, nacido en Hamburgo de padres daneses, es uno de los reyes del melodrama cinematografico. En 1922 empieza su carrera teatral. Contratado por la UFA en 1934, dirige unas cuantas peliculas hasta que se ve obligado a salir de Alemania en 1937. Empieza a dirigir peliculas en los Estados unidos en 1942, pero su epoca gloriosa empieza un par de anos despues de ser contratado por Univer sal en 1950. Realiza hasta 1958 un punado de peliculas, algunas de ellas remakes de las dirigidas en los anos 30 por John M. Stahl, del que parece recoger el testigo de especialista en el melodrama mas genuino. Este estupendo director supo mostrar ma gistralmente el conglomerado de contradictorios sentimientos que forman parte del discurrir vital de los seres humanos. Peliculas como Escrito sobre el viento (Written in the Wind, 1956) o Imitacion a la vida (Imitation of Life, 1958), la ultima que dirigio, convierten el cine en una experiencia irresistible. Abordo, a lo largo de su carrera, otros generos, la mayoria de las veces con solvencia. Por ejemplo, estos dos gratos westerns que, desde luego, no forman parte de lo mas granado de su obra, pero que soportan con holgura cualquier mirada atenta.Take Me to Town. 1953. 81 minutos. 1889-1937Exotico realizador, polaco de nacimiento, llega a los Estados Unidos algunos anos despues del triunfo de la revolucion sovietica en Rusia y realiza un punado de singulares peliculas hasta su muerte, acaecida en 1937. De estetica algo “kitsch”, son recordadas El velo pintado (The Painted Veil, 1934), con Greta Garbo, y la deliciosa El jardin de Ala (The Garden of Allah, 1936), con Marlene Dietrich y Charles Boyer. Sus dos westerns son igualmente singulares: una historia de espionaje en el marco de la Guerra Civil norteamericana (La espia numero 13), y una version mas, ni siquiera la primera sonora, de la historia escrita por Peter B. Fue el director favorito del comico Red Skelton, para el que dirigio, sin acreditar, A Southern Yankee. En un par de ocasiones trabajo con la pareja comica formada por Bud Abbott y Lou Costello.
